Transnational Race and the Black Movement Essay - 2227 Words
The United States and Latin America have seen their fair shares of inequality and hardships when it comes to those of the minority status. Minorities have successfully fought back in the timeless battle to achieve equality, rather it be with those of their own race, or from different ethnic backgrounds. When groups are able to coexist, their ideologies are expressed to one another and at times are able to influence different groups on their attitudes toward different subjects. Now that immigration has astronomically increased to the United States, the idea of this country as a ââ¬Å"melting potâ⬠has never been more correct. Being that more individuals are turning to the United States for permanent residence, race has obtained multipleâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Anderson notes that many tourists who travel to Honduras identify the Garifuna community as being ââ¬Å"poor, scary, and Black, with the threat of violence lurking in the cornersâ⬠, but in the same instance se e their community as a place of tranquility (Anderson 2005, 102). This innate reaction that is seen in tourist is one of the many examples that stereotypes that are generally associated with African Americans have found themselves into other societies. The citizens of this community are not given the fair chance of being identify as an individual group of people, and are instead lumped together with a totally different way of life. The dichotomy that Garifunas and others of African descent face is that in one instance they can be characterized as peaceful and in another instance can have the same characteristic and someone who is irate and violent. The stereotypes witnessed around the world are far more prevalent in America due to the use of them to characterize a group of people that have historically been at a disadvantage. Now that more individuals are coming to America, the minority class status has grown exponentially, which has led to the wide use of stereotypes to describe not only blacks, but Latinos, Asian Americans, and other represented ethnic groups. These stereotypes change what it means to be a minority in the United States, and alter the way individuals view their racial backgrounds. When looking at racial relations outside of the United States,Show MoreRelatedBook Review: Black Feminist Thought (Patricia Hill Collins) Essay1077 Words à |à 5 PagesAlexandra Bobet HIST 3119 Spring 2013 Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment (review) Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment. An Analysis Of Ken Kesy s One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
In Ken Kesyââ¬â¢s One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest, humor is present in a very powerful form. Normally, insane people donââ¬â¢t have the capacity to laugh or find the humor in something as would normal people do. They live tragic existences, wandering day by day in the bland, depressing world of an asylum. They have forgotten how to live because they are under the commanding rule of the head nurse, and under the behavioral influence of drug doses and bossy orderlies. The patientsââ¬â¢ laughter is a therapeutic form. In the novel laughter represents freedom and an escape from nurse Ratchedââ¬â¢s restrictions. Laughter proves a vital role in helping the patients deal with their problems. Not only does it help them deal with problems but it also gave them the push toward progress on getting out of the institution. Randall McMurphy is sent to the asylum, he shows them that to laugh is good, and laughing at yourself can sometimes be the best medicine. He is the comic healer who gives life to the otherwise hopeless patients of the asylum. McMurphy was the one who started making people laughing in the ward. When he first came into the ward he was cracking jokes and shaking everybodyââ¬â¢s hand. (16) No one in the ward responded with any real response but confusion. Nobody knew what laughter was in the ward, it was taken from them. The only thing they had was board games and Mrs. Ratchedââ¬â¢s music (15). The ward was a very depressing place. When Mcmurphy comes into the ward his laughing was making

Joy Ride Free Essays
Michelle Cronin Professor Radford English 101 8 October 2012 Begging for an Escape ââ¬Å"Joy Rideâ⬠is a short story written by Richard Russo. It features a boy, John Dern, and his mother, who both long for an escape from their lives at the time. This story follows the theme that one key aspect the human condition is the search for an escape. We will write a custom essay sample on Joy Ride or any similar topic only for you Order Now At some point in life, most humans wish to escape their past and present state of living. There may be many motivating factors behind this. However, most attempt to escape for one of three main reasons. These include using an escape as a means of finding freedom, an escape to help another person, or just as a temporary move to solve a problem. In this story, John and his mother have all three reasons in the back of their minds as they see their lives disappear in the rearview mirror. Johnââ¬â¢s mother wants an escape so that she can be free. Free from stress, free from worry, free from her husbandâ⬠¦ So she leaves a note with a simple goodbye and she is off. She takes her son with her and breaks free from the ties that bind her. She believes that this country is big enough for a fresh start for the both of them. She says, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not only a free country, itââ¬â¢s a big one. Big enough for us to get lost in. Weââ¬â¢re bound for freedom, sweetieâ⬠(76). Johnââ¬â¢s mother is trying to explain to him that this country is huge, and that if the two of them try, they can get lost in the freedom. They have the power and the ability to leave, escaping the lifestyle they are in right now. By leaving, they have the opportunity make anything of their future. Johnââ¬â¢s mother also explains that she wants to be free from the marriage that is slowly ripping her apart. She says, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just that living with him ââ¬â being married to him ââ¬â is just like being covered with these little cuts all the time. Thereââ¬â¢s no big gash you can show anybody, nothing theyââ¬â¢d believe would really hurt, but these damn little nicks, they suck the blood right out of youâ⬠(92). Johnââ¬â¢s mother would like to be free of her husbandââ¬â¢s ties that seem to terrorize her wherever she goes. It appears that he does nothing to cause her extraordinary pain, but the little problems are the ones that hurt her the most. Just being with her husband leaves her with all of these painful thoughts and memories every single day. Itââ¬â¢s the little problems that Johnââ¬â¢s mother is trying so hard to escape. However, her motivation for escape also has to do with John. He needs this escape as much as his mother. John was growing up and falling in with the wrong crowd, making very bad decisions. His ââ¬Å"friendsâ⬠talk of a trip they took to Old Orchard Beach in Maine. When thinking about this, John decides that he too needs to get out of Camden. ââ¬Å"This is exactly the kind of adventure I feared and longed forâ⬠(78). In this quote, John is conveying his need for escape. His mother sees how necessary an escape is and how desperately John needs a new outlook on life. And this is exactly what his mother intends to give him. As they go on their journey, both John and his mother experience a little taste of the freedom they have hungered for. Years later when discussing the trip, his mother explains the real reason behind the joy ride. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll tell you what I do remember. I remember that the reason for that trip was you. What I remember was the vicious little monster you were becomingâ⬠(110). In this quote, Johnââ¬â¢s mother is revealing her true motive behind their escape. She wanted to give him an experience that would allow him to change the way he was behaving before it became too late. Her son was falling in with the wrong crowd and she wanted him to get out of there as fast as possible before he did something horrible. Whether the escape is permanent or temporary, it remains a memory that will forever be engrained in oneââ¬â¢s mind. An escape can last anywhere from minutes to a lifetime, but it will remain a memory throughout oneââ¬â¢s entire life. For example, when reminiscing, John says ââ¬Å"This whole trip was nothing more than a joy ride, like the one my junior high friends had taken, and now I could understand their reluctance to talk about it. No doubt it had been a shabby thing, devoid of gloryâ⬠(108). John is saying that their escape had only been a temporary freedom and that it ended shortly after it had begun. In comparing his joy ride with that of his friends, he claims that both did not end up the way they had imagined and that he did not want to talk about it, just as his friends had not wanted to talk about their trip. However, he goes on to say ââ¬Å"More than twenty years now, as I think back on our joy ride that spring, it seems far more remarkable than it did at the timeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (109). He is expressing his sincere thought on the subject in that even after decades have passed. Although it seemed to somewhat fail because he and his mother ended up going back to his father at the time, with time, he begins to realize that the trip meant more than he originally thought. No matter how long or short the escape is, the memory will last a lifetime. The word escape can be defined in many ways. The definition that applies most to this story is ââ¬Å"an act of breaking free from confinement or control. â⬠In ââ¬Å"Joy Ride,â⬠John and his mother were begging for an escape from their life. Throughout the actual trip, Johnââ¬â¢s mother had him convinced that she wanted to escape from her husband. But at the end of the story after years have passed, she explains that the true reason behind the escape was to change the path he was walking. John needed to escape the group he was in. People attempt to escape for many reasons. For John and his mother, it was for freedom, freedom from Johnââ¬â¢s father, freedom from the expectations of Johnââ¬â¢s friends. And although it was not a permanent escape, it will be permanently engrained in the minds of both John and his mother. How to cite Joy Ride, Essay examples

Correlation Between Oil and Gold Silver Using Regression Analysis free essay sample
Introduction Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) is a demutualised commodity exchange with permanent recognition from the Government of India to facilitate online trading, clearing and settlement operations for commodity futures markets across the country. Since its inception millions of small and medium enterprises, corporate houses, exporters, importers and traders have benefitted from this nationwide electronic trading platform through its efficient and transparent price discovery and price risk management. MCX ranks No. 1 in silver, No. 2 in gold, and No. in crude oil. This document contains the correlation between change in prices of Gold, Silver and OIL with respect to each other. Over the last 50 years or so, gold and oil have generally moved together in terms of price, with a positive price correlation. The price of oil is poised to rise steadily as the supply/demand imbalance increases and the dollar declines, even if there are no supply disruptions, terrorist threats or geopolitical concerns to consider. As this happens, the price of precious metals will climb until they eventually catch up to their historic ratios. The oil prices definitely determine the costs of a countryââ¬â¢s economy. However, the degree of the effects may vary among different industries. High oil prices may dampen a countryââ¬â¢s economy activities and stock market as a whole. The same theory applies to gold, silver prices too. Nevertheless, there should be some industries which benefit from high oil and gold, silver prices. Video Reflection African Americans in Sports free essay sample
After watching this video I feel very enlightened and that I have learned a lot about African American struggles through sports. I never realized the amount of discrimination and prejudice they faced, nor did I realize the diversity challenges they faced. From Jack Johnson all the way through to Hank Aaron the discrimination and threats that African American athletes faced was disheartening to say the least. Before watching this video I never realized that Jack Johnson faced the threats or that his fights caused many of his own race to be mobbed and doted as a result. Even when he beat the all American Jiffies he had no respect, despite being one of the greatest boxers of all time African American or not. The lack of support from white America was surprising and personally, always thought that they would just cheer on the best athlete regardless. Fast foreword to Jesse Owens in the Berlin Olympics and you wouldnt know that African American athletes were not well supported. We will write a custom essay sample on Video Reflection: African Americans in Sports or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Jesse Owens seemingly had the entire nation backing him yet when he got back the beliefs still lingered and almost destroyed him. Moving to baseball, without Jackie Robinson baseball wouldnt be the same as it is today, yet he faced death threats and had things thrown at him on a daily basis. Given all of their struggles with discrimination its hard to imagine sports being the same had America not eventually accepted the best athlete regardless of color. While the discrimination was rough the hardest thing to overcome was the prejudice they faced being less talented and not as good as White Athletes. The biggest obstacle for African Americans to overcome was without a doubt the prejudice. America had a set of beliefs based around the white man being superior in all things. Jack Johnson beat every man they put in front of him, yet his attitude was widely viewed as unacceptable. Even when he beat Americas Champion nothing changed. Hardheadedness of America wouldnt let them accept anything else even when it was proven.Jack Johnson out-boxed, Jesse Owens out ran, Jackie Robinson, Satchel Page, and Hank Aaron outplayed, yet the white athlete was still superior. It was widely based on the prejudice that African American athletes were incapable of handling themselves in a respectful manner. Even though Joe Lewis proved that theory to be false. The prejudice wouldnt break and the struggle would continue. In this video I personally thought one of the most important moments occurred in the chase for the home run king. Many people believed Hank Aaron was after the record for his own personal gloating, and I wouldve been on board with that theory. However, when Hank Aaron was asked about it he said Im dont want them to forget Babe Ruth, I just want them to remember me. This quote to me was special and significant in that it showed African Americans wanted to have their own legacy. Despite being different in every physical characteristic, they just wanted to play like everyone else. That ideal in the ND I believe is what conquered all of the hate.Despite being exciting to watch and bringing a new skill level to the games they didnt think they were superior, they just wanted to be able to prove they could play. Before I watched this video Ill admit, I didnt know how hard it was for African American athletes. Given every sport today is mostly populated by African Americans, its difficult and near impossible to imagine sports without them. Overall would say, even though pro sports are flooded with African Americans today; I learned how hard they had to work for the right to not only compete, but to be accepted as equals.

The gold rush essays
The gold rush essays What if the shinny material was never found? In a world of hypothetical questions one has to wonder where our country would be if we had not secured what is currently known to be California, from the ruling hand of Mexico. California state history would be severely different had the Gold Rush never happened. To better understand the affects of this question, I will talk about where the gold rush took place, the results of the gold rush, and the effects of what would happen if the gold rush had not taken place. California derives fro the Latin words Cali and Fornix. Cali fornix means hot oven, another dead end for most linguistic inquiries, but which actually means alchemical crucible, the sort of alchemical crucible that has a single purpose: to turn ordinary materials into gold. (Henry 283). California was later recognized as the golden state; the gold rush came and soon swept California by surprise. The most prevalent area of mining that took place was around the foothills of San Francisco. In the start of the early 1840s there were only a few hundred people living in San Francisco but by the end of the gold rush thousands inhabited there. The citys real estate soon began to rise significantly as did the number of murders and such related crimes. The city of San Francisco burned to the ground six times in the first two years of existence, but the citys vast gold digging entrepreneurs rebuilt the city each and every time. One could say that Californias reason for being was the gold miners who came into the area in search of wealth and fame (Bonanza). Every nook and cranny of the California Mountains was completely engulfed with such miners and as the digging space near the city began to crowd miners began spreading northward and southward. As the miners began to come by the thousands, California began to see the results of its natural fruits (gold)....

The Best Way to Learn Italian
The Best Way to Learn Italian The Italian national soccer team, known as Gli Azzurri because of their blue jerseys, has ranked among the top teams in the world for years. Theyve won the World Cup many times, Italian-born players routinely sign multimillion-dollar contracts for European teams, and the Italian soccer leagues offer some of the most talented competition anywhere. The overriding reason for their success? Practice, practice, practice. And thats the secret to learning Italian or any other foreign language. Exercise your language muscles every day, and soon you, too, will be competing with the best of them. While many think that the quickest and most effective way to learn Italian is the total immersion method- traveling to Italy for an extended period and studying at any of the thousands of language schools throughout the country- there are other, more sustainable options to explore from home, too. Start Studying Youve already taken the most important step to learning Italian when you started searching online (and found this website)à because the most important thing is to start studying! And even though there are tons of resources available on the market, any method is appropriate as long as you maintain a consistent study schedule. Choose Your Learning Materials So once you choose a realistic amount of time that you can devote to your Italian studies each day, then reading an Italian textbook, taking a language course at a university or local language school, completing workbook exercises, listening to podcast or mp3s, or conversing with a native Italian speaker all count. Define Your Goals Many people mistake a desire to be conversational for a desire for fluency. The whole point of spending all of this time learning Italian is so you can have real conversations with real people, so keep that in mind as you choose your learning materials. Find things that are practical and that offer language you can use with actual people. Stick to Your Routine Spend some time every day reading, writing, speaking, and listening to Italian to become accustomed to the target language. Slowly but surely, your confidence will build with your language partners, your accent will become less pronounced, your vocabulary will expand, and youll be communicating in Italian. Maybe youll even start speaking Italian with your hands. In the end, visiting Italy to have a total immersion experience is wonderful, especially when doing things like a homestay where you literally eat, breathe, and (hopefully) dream in Italian. But, as you know, trips end, and humans easily forget what theyââ¬â¢ve learned, so routine is key if you truly want to be conversational.
